A new International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulation aimed at significantly reducing sulphur emissions in the shipping industry will enter into force in 2020. Even though this is still over a year away, the industry is already dealing with the topic due to the massive increases in ship-operating costs it will involve. In order to offer its customers better predictability of bunker costs, Hamburg Süd will introduce a tailored Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF) in January 2019.
Debates about digitalization in the shipping industry are at least just as intense as those about IMO 2020. One buzzword here is blockchain. Experts believe that the new technology will significantly simplify the maritime industry in a similar way to the introduction of the container some 60 years ago. On September 15, 2018, Hamburg Süd employees around the globe volunteered their own time to take part in Coastal Cleanup Day, clearing waste from beaches and shorelines. In total, they gathered over seven tons of waste.
