Apprenticeship careers at Hamburg Süd

General

Hamburg Süd offers five different apprenticeship programs for those seeking a successful start to their career.

There’s one thing all the apprenticeship programs at Hamburg Süd share: We make your entry into working life easy. An apprentice with some experience helps you get oriented. You’ll have a contact person in each department at Hamburg Süd as you make the rounds. Seminars and language courses give you the chance to improve skills outside your working day. Future shipping agents also have the option, after the second year of apprenticeship, to spend six to eight weeks at a European office of Hamburg Süd to start collecting international career experience. Hamburg Süd also continues to support you on your career path when your apprenticeship is over. After successfully completing the program, our apprentices can earn a university degree through us, including qualification as a Bachelor of Science in of Shipping, Trade, and Transportation (BSc) and a Bachelor of Arts in International Travel Tourism Management (BA ITTM). We also offer those who complete their intermediate secondary school with good grades a chance to earn their entrance certificate to a university of applied sciences during their apprenticeship.

Shipping agents

manage all the tasks related to operating and deploying ocean-going vessels. As a shipping agent, for example, you will organize customs clearance at the port, plan the marine transport of goods, and check and optimize the timetables of our regular service. You’ll be in communication with our customers, suppliers, and crews.

Job vacancies

Office managers

are real all-rounders. They ensure the effective flow of information and communication, and handle organizational activities. This includes, for example, internal and external correspondence and the coordination of workflows.

IT assistants

work on projects related to planning, introducing, or modifying new IT systems. They need a good understanding of the business and organizational connections within the company, so that they can develop the right IT solutions for each department.

IT specialists

master the fundamentals both on the technical and the business side. They do more than design and implement software solutions – they’re also responsible for supporting users.

Job vacancies

Tourism managers

organize and communicate trips. They handle customer support and plan group and individual trips, book flights, hotels, rental cars, and event tickets. Expense reports and complaints management also fall within their remit.

Your dual work–study opportunity at Hamburg Süd

Bachelor of Science in Business Informatics, in collaboration with NORDAKADEMIE Elmshorn

Business informatics specialists at Hamburg Süd are responsible for ensuring that the interplay between the different departments and logistics processes runs smoothly. They also ensure the global availability of critical information. The work–study program closely links IT and business expertise to practice. Students rotate between different departments at Hamburg Süd, allowing them to directly apply their newly gained knowledge. Candidates need an above-average university or university of applied sciences entrance certificate, and they have to pass the Nordakademie assessment test.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, in collaboration with the Hamburg School of Business Administration (HSBA)

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration course at the HSBA prepares you to work in the various strategic departments at Hamburg Süd. The theoretical part of the program teaches practical business knowledge, including accounting and bookkeeping, cost-to-performance analysis, marketing, and strategic management. During the practical modules at Hamburg Süd, students apply what they’ve learned as they rotate through different departments. The admission requirement is a university or university of applied sciences entrance certificate with an average of 10 points in German, math, and English.

Job vacancies

Your internship at Hamburg Süd

A three- to six-month internship at Hamburg Süd gives students in different subjects, including logistics, business administration, and information sciences a chance to take their first steps within a dynamic, international company. Concurrently with the internship or after completion, there’s the opportunity in some areas to write your bachelor’s or master’s thesis with our support.

Secondary school students in 10th grade or higher who would like to get a first impression of the apprenticeships at Hamburg Süd can also apply for an internship.
