Please tell us a little about yourself.
My name’s Hendrik Höper, I’m 20 years old, and started my dual vocational training as an IT specialist in application development at Hamburg Süd in August 2016.
Why did you opt for the dual occupational training scheme at Hamburg Süd?
I had always been taken with technology and had applied to various firms back then. Hamburg Süd impressed me at the time by their prompt reply and invitation to an interview, as well as by their nice, informal manner. I simply had the sense of fitting in well, and this has proved true to this day.
What did you like especially? What perhaps also surprised you?
Initially, I was a bit surprised that I only got to see a little of the actual programming of the company’s applications. I’ve since come to appreciate that it was important to get to know and understand the organizational process first. I’ve now got down to the depths of our applications and find that the wait paid off. What I like best personally is Hamburg Süd’s social environment and the co-workers, who always try to help me.
What have you learned in the last year? Give us a few examples.

Do you have any tips for interested students who might still be uncertain?
If you bring along interest for the IT field, and maybe even have some previous knowledge and are looking for nice colleagues, then this is the place for you! The job is multifaceted and hard to narrow down to one or two specialties. What’s more, IT will just keep on growing, and more and more “of my ilk” will be needed everywhere.
